Rasmussen Reports has a new poll (August 13, 700 LV) out this morning showing McCain up a point, one of the few surveys this year that has put him on top:
McCain (R) 49 (+7)
Obama (D) 48 (-1)
Of course they also have a poll up showing Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman leading Saturday Night Live star and Air America host Al Franken by only three points, a vast improvement for Mr. Franken from most surveys taken this year. Part of the reason Rasmussen get such different numbers can be attributed to the fact that they generally use an extremely narrow (one day in this case) time horizon and utilize computers and automated systems to administer the poll.
Winning Colorado is a large goal of the Western part of Obama's 50 State Strategy, and losing there could cripple him if he chooses not to contest Florida or Ohio. But the trend lines in Colorado have been pointing one way all year, and a one-day robo-survey is hardly a reliable indicator of anything.

Who do you think has the better stance in relation to Russia, Obama or McCain? What should the USA be doing now that Russia has clearly tried to destabilize Georgia and is threatening Poland with military action over the missile defense shield?
I have a feeling a wider war is on the horizon...
I find it interesting that these polls are used in the media to garner concern, one way or the other, that a candidate might be gaining or losing ground in the election. A Gallup poll for instance... Who are these people being polled? It certainly isn't me. A huge percentage of our population uses mobile phones only, so they aren't being polled. How many people are? It certainly doesn't seem like enough people to truly have insight into the entire voting population in an urban area, and certainly not in the country. I see these polls as just a gimmick or a hoax. Better yet, poorly acquired, loosely truthful information gathering processes, used by the media establishment to create a news buzz. Sure the buzz is empty, but so is half of what they chat about on cable news anyway. The only polling that I'm concerned with is the exit polling. Hopefully we won't witness another election where the vast majority of people are claiming their votes to be for so and so, where we eventually elect such and such instead. Hopefully....or I'm leaving this country.
